On May 15th, 1886, Emily Dickinson died in her family's home in Amherst Massachusetts.
The prolific poet--author of some 1,775 poems--succumbed to nephritis, an acute
inflammation of the kidneys, at age 55. Dickinson had spent the final 21 years of her life
in seclusion.
