As 2007 comes to a close, we at Teenreads.com have compiled some of our favorite books of the year for teens. Along with HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, the conclusion to J.K. Rowling’s classic series featuring the bespectacled young wizard, we spotlight THE ABSOLUTELY TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN, Sherman Alexie’s first novel for young adults and a finalist for the National Book Award; ECLIPSE, the third book in Stephenie Meyer's riveting vampire love saga that includes TWILIGHT and NEW MOON; GUYAHOLIC, a funny and poignant follow-up to VEGAN VIRGIN VALENTINE by Carolyn Mackler; and THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET, an entirely new kind of reading experience from Caldecott Honor artist Brian Selznick that brings together elements of the picture book, the graphic novel and film.

This year the Traveling Pants returned for one last, glorious summer in FOREVER IN BLUE, James Patterson resumed his Maximum Ride fantasy/adventure series with SAVING THE WORLD AND OTHER EXTREME SPORTS, and Gossip Girl came to an end in May --- although fans rejoiced when a prequel to Cecily von Ziegesar’s bestselling series released in October. Other series updates in 2007 included The Princess Diaries, The Clique, the Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld, The Au Pairs, The Gatekeepers and Ursula K. Le Guin’s Annals of the Western Shore sequence.

We also revisit the series titles that made their debuts in 2007. Among them are THE LUXE, Anna Godbersen’s novel about five teens in 1899 Manhattan, where appearance matters more than anything else and breaking the social code means running the risk of being ostracized forever; ANGELS ON SUNSET BOULEVARD by Melissa de la Cruz, a fast-paced story concerning a social networking website that started out innocently enough but has slowly turned into something much darker; and LILY DALE: AWAKENING, the start of a paranormal suspense series written by Wendy Corsi Staub, the award-winning author of over 60 books for adults and teens.

Additional standouts in 2007 included Alyson Noel’s SAVING ZOE, in which one sister's secrets save the other's life --- in more ways than one; BEFORE I DIE by Jenny Downham, a thought-provoking book about a 16-year-old girl with a terminal case of leukemia who compiles a "To Do Before I Die" list; SLAM, a witty and poignant story from debut YA novelist Nick Hornby in which a teenage boy is unexpectedly thrust into fatherhood; and Gabrielle Zevin’s MEMOIRS OF A TEENAGE AMNESIAC, a deeply moving novel concerning a young girl who loses her memory in an accident and must find a way to regain her bearings.

We hope you enjoy our year-end feature and make new discoveries along the way, as you look forward to what lies ahead in 2008.

If Naomi had picked tails, she would have won the coin toss. She wouldn’t have had to go back for the yearbook camera, and she wouldn’t have hit her head on the steps. She wouldn’t have woken up in an ambulance with amnesia. She certainly would have remembered her boyfriend, Ace. She might even have remembered why she fell in love with him in the first place. She would understand why her best friend, Will, keeps calling her “Chief.” She’d know about her mom’s new family and her dad’s fiancée. She never would have met James, the boy with the questionable past and the even fuzzier future, who tells her he once wanted to kiss her. She wouldn’t have wanted to kiss him back.

But Naomi picked heads.

Thirteen-year-old Jack, only a bard-in-training, is amazed to have caused an earthquake. But his sister, Lucy, has been stolen by the Lady of the Lake. Caught between belief in the old gods and Christianity (this is 790 AD Britain), Jack calls upon his ash wood staff to subdue a passel of unruly monks, and, for his daring, ends up in a knucker hole. It’s unforgettable (for the boy and for readers), as are the magical reappearance of the berserker Thorgil from a burial by moss; new characters Pega, a slave girl from Jack's village, and the eager-to-marry-her Bugaboo (a hobgoblin king); kelpies; yarthkins; and elves (not the enchanted sprites one would expect but the fallen angels of legend).
