October 2009
October’s Books into Movies roundup is certainly doling out more treats than tricks so close to Halloween with three fun films that promise spine-tingling thrills and chills, plenty of adventure, offbeat humor in spades, and, let’s face it, some pretty awesome costume ideas.
Perfect for a spooky night out are The Vampire’s Assistant --- based on the first three installments of Darren Shan’s bestselling Cirque du Freak series, replete with sideshow freaks, warring vampire factions and other creepy creatures --- and Where the Wild Things Are, a darker (and slightly terrifying) interpretation of Maurice Sendak’s beloved classic picture book about a mischievous boy who crowns himself king of an imaginary island populated by make-believe monsters. And those looking to satisfy their cravings for quirky comedy and sarcastic quips need to search no further than Whip It, a fish-out-of-water, coming-of-age tale that just so happens to take place at the Roller Derby.
In November, we’ll be spotlighting the hugely anticipated second installment of the ever-popular Twilight series, New Moon, as well as Disney’s new 3D take on a classic holiday tale, A Christmas Carol.

The Wild Things desperately long for a leader to guide them, just as Max longs for a kingdom to rule. When Max is crowned king, he promises to create a place where everyone will be happy.

Sara and Brian Fitzgerald’s life with their young son and their two-year-old daughter, Kate, is forever altered when they learn that Kate has Leukemia. The parents’ only hope is to conceive another child, specifically intended to save Kate’s life. For some, such genetic engineering would raise both moral and ethical questions; for the Fitzgeralds, Sara in particular, there is no choice but to do whatever it takes to keep Kate alive. And what it takes is Anna.
Kate and Anna share a bond closer than most sisters; though Kate is older, she relies on her little sister --- in fact, her life depends on Anna.
Throughout their young lives, the sisters endure various medical procedures and hospital stays --- just another part of their close-knit family’s otherwise normal life. Sara, a loving wife and mother who left her career as an attorney to care for her daughter, is sometimes lost inside the single-minded caregiver she has become in her efforts to save Kate. Her strong, supportive husband, Brian, is often rendered powerless and passive by his wife’s strength and determination. And their only son, Jesse, drifts, at times all but forgotten as Kate and Anna take center stage.
Until Anna, now 11, says “no.” Seeking medical emancipation, she hires her own lawyer, initiating a court case that divides the family and that could leave Kate’s rapidly failing body in the hands of fate.
Based on the bestselling book from Jodi Picoult, My Sister’s Keeper reveals surprising truths that challenge one’s perceptions of family love and loyalty and give new meaning to the definition of healing.

November 2008
There is much to be thankful for in November --- and we’re not just talking about family gatherings, delicious turkey dinners and days off from school. Our latest Books into Movies feature spotlights three films that cannot be missed.
Of course, everyone is talking about the appearance of Edward Cullen in the November 21st movie version of Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romance novel, TWILIGHT. We always appreciate when films stay true to the books we love, and director Catherine Hardwicke has followed its vision as closely as possible: “When I read Stephenie’s book, I fell in love with it just like you did. I wanted to see Edward and Bella living and breathing!” (In fact, the author refused to sell the movie rights unless Summit Entertainment promised in their contract not to portray any of the vampires with “canine or incisor teeth longer or more pronounced than may be found in human beings.”) With a phenomenally talented young cast and careful filming --- they had to stop shooting every time it got sunny! --- this one will definitely live up to its mega-hype.
November 7th marks the release of the highly anticipated The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. This incredibly moving (and, let's face it, insanely depressing) adaptation of John Boyne's award-winning novel about the Holocaust is told from the innocent eyes of a Nazi officer's young son and promises to meet the high standards setby the soon-to-be classic book. Keep the tissues handy, though --- the surprise ending will leave you sobbing long after you leave the theater.
And last but certainly not least is The Clique, a direct-to-DVD film based on Lisi Harrison’s bestselling series about five girls who belong to The Pretty Committee, the most popular clique at Octavian Country Day. Join Massie, Dylan, Kristen, Alicia and Claire at their exclusive private school in Westchester County, New York, beginning November 18th.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Cast: Asa Butterfield, Jack Scanlon, Amber Beattie, David Thewlis, Vera Farmiga, Richard Johnson, Shelia Hancock, Rupert Friend, Jim Norton
Director: Mark Herman
Distributor: Miramax Films, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Release Date: November 7th (limited)
Based on: THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS by John Boyne

Twilight is an action-packed, modern-day love story between a vampire and a human. Bella Swan has always been a little bit different, never caring about fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix high school. When her mother remarries and sends Bella to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she doesn’t expect much of anything to change.
Then she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen, a boy unlike any she’s ever met. Intelligent and witty, he sees straight into her soul. Soon, Bella and Edward are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance. Edward can run faster than a mountain lion, he can stop a moving car with his bare hands and hasn’t aged since 1918. Like all vampires, he’s immortal. But he doesn’t have fangs and he doesn’t drink human blood; Edward and his family are unique among vampires in their lifestyle choice. To Edward, Bella is that thing he has waited 90 years for --- a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy.
But what will Edward and Bella do when James, Laurent and Victoria, the Cullens’ mortal vampire enemies, come to town, looking for her?

NICK & NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST actually began when author Rachel Cohn mentioned to her friend, fellow writer David Levithan, her idea for a novel. Two New Jersey teenagers would meet at a music club in Manhattan and have an all-night series of adventures as they keep searching for where the next great band is playing. Levithan loved the idea so much that he asked if he could write Nick’s part, and Cohn agreed. A few months later, he sent her Nick’s opening chapter, and they began emailing each other back and forth for the rest of the summer. Without any planning, the book --- which Levithan has called “a truly kick-ass love story” --- thus emerged and has now been adapted into a major motion picture. Starring Michael Cera of Superbad and Juno fame, and releasing on October 3rd, this is one movie you won’t want to miss.

Though they have nothing in common except their taste for music, their chance encounter leads to an all-night quest to find a legendary band’s secret show and ends up becoming the first date in a romance that could change both their lives.

parallel universe that lies just on the other side. It is here that young Tristan
Thorne makes a wild-eyed promise to the prettiest girl in the village, whose
heart he hopes to win: that he will bring her back a fallen star. Now, in order
to make good on his promise, Tristan will have to cross the forbidden wall,
and enter a mysterious kingdom lit by unending magic and unfolding legends of
which he will quickly become a part.
In this fantastical realm known as Stormhold, Tristan discovers that the fallen
star is not at all what he expected but a spirited young woman injured by her
cosmic tumble. Now, she is in terrible danger --- sought after by colossal powers
including the King’s scheming sons for whom only she can secure the throne;
and a chillingly powerful witch desperate to use the star to achieve eternal
youth and beauty.
As Tristan sets out to protect the star and bring her back to his beloved on
the other side of the wall, his journey will bring incredible encounters with

The Nanny Diaries tells the story of the emotional and often humorous journey
of Annie Braddock, a young woman from a working-class neighborhood in New Jersey,
struggling to understand her place in the world. Fresh out of college, she gets
tremendous pressure from her nurse mother to find a respectable position in
the business world, although Annie would prefer to trade in her blackberry for
an anthropologist's field diary. Through a serendipitous meeting, Annie ends
up in the elite and ritualistic culture of Manhattan's Upper East Side --- as
remote from Annie's suburban New Jersey upbringing as life in an Amazon tribal
village.
Choosing to duck out of real life, Annie accepts the position as a nanny for
a wealthy family, referred to as simply "the X's." She quickly learns
that life is not very rosy on the other side of the tax bracket, as she must
cater to the every whim of Mrs. X and her precocious son Grayer, while attempting
to avoid the formidable Mr. X. Life becomes even more complicated when Annie
falls for a gorgeous neighbor of the X’s who she nicknames Harvard Hottie,
and is forced to explore what she wants to do with her life.

October 2005
This month we have a particularly tasty offering for our Books Into Movies feature.
In Her Shoes is the film adaptation of Jennifer Weiner's sweet and fluffy
Chick Lit novel of the same name. While this movie promises to be as irresistible
as the book --- with actresses like Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette in the starring
roles, and Curtis Hanson, who directed L.A. Confidential and 8 Mile, in the director's
chair --- In Her Shoes is just spicy enough, and has more heart and soul
than your typical Hollywood trifle.
In Her Shoes
Cast: Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette, Shirley MacLaine, Mark Feuerstein
Director: Curtis Hanson
Distributor: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: October 7th
Based on: IN
HER SHOES by Jennifer Weiner
Maggie is a party girl who barely graduated from high school, recycles jobs as
quickly as yesterday's newspapers and believes her biggest asset is her attractiveness
to the opposite sex. Her recurring state of unemployment leaves her virtually
homeless as she bounces between the sofas of her friends and relatives. With no
confidence in her intellectual ability, she prizes makeup over books and has an
innate talent for choosing the perfect accessories and clothes for any occasion.
Rose is a Princeton-educated attorney at a top law firm in Philadelphia. Her beautifully
decorated prewar apartment is her haven from the outside world. With her nose
perpetually to the grindstone, she struggles constantly with her weight and never
feels comfortable in the clothes she wears. Her low self-esteem regarding her
physical appearance has left her dating life non-existent. Rose's one joy in life
is shoes (because they always fit), but unfortunately she has few social opportunities
to remove them from her closet.
After a calamitous falling out, sisters Maggie and Rose travel a bumpy road toward
true appreciation for one another --- aided along the way by the discovery of
the maternal grandmother they thought was dead.
September marks the release of two very different movies based
on books. The first is a re-cut version of The Outsiders, a
classic you may or may not have seen that's based on the novel
by S.E. Hinton. This new version, available on DVD, contains
a ton of special features and gives you the chance to see now-familiar
stars like Tom Cruise before they were famous, with bad hair
and wearing ridiculous '80s-style clothes.
The second September offering is a classic in a very different
sense of the word. Whether you've read Charles Dickens's OLIVER
TWIST or not, you've definitely heard about it. And while the
book may be one of the "classics," according to your teachers
and parents, the film version is anything but dull. With its
elaborate sets, gorgeous costumes and sinister overtones, the
movie promises to be darkly entertaining.

The tension between two groups, the Greasers and the Socials ("Socs"), puts Ponyboy
Curtis and his best friend Johnny Cade in a bad spot. One night at the movies,
Ponyboy and Johnny fall in love with Sherri "Cherry" Valance and Marcia once they

and Marcia are girls for the snobbish, popular and rich group, the Socs. When
Johnny kills Bob Sheldon, the toughest and meanest member of the Socs, the Socs
demand a rumble against the Greasers.
Twenty-two years after its debut, Francis Ford Coppola has re-cut his 1983 film

Teased and taunted. Virtually ignored by close friends. Even
pelted in the chest with a scoop of mashed potatoes in the
school cafeteria amidst laughter from the entire student body.
This isn't the ideal first day of high school for Melinda
Sordino, a sharp, witty "everygirl" who turns into a social
pariah following a tragic but obscure set of events at an
end-of-summer party.
In the film adaptation of Laurie Halse Anderson's award-winning
novel, Speak follows Melinda through her tumultuous
freshman year as an outcast, revealing how she deals with
isolation, loneliness, and the trauma of those indescribable
events of that summer night that have rendered her physically
and emotionally mute.
At once hilarious and utterly heartbreaking, Speak
chronicles the journey of this young woman's struggle to express
herself as she battles her own inner demons and the unforgiving
social environment to finally confront and overcome her catastrophic
experience last summer.
