WORD OF MOUTH

March 2005

Tell Us What You Are Reading...Find Out What Other Teens Are Reading.

This contest period's winner was kcbacon5@msn.com, who received a copy of I AM THE MESSENGER by Markus Zusak.

chanelgirl@sailormoon.com
I recommend that everybody read Life Is Funny by E.R. Frank. It's a good book about teens and the problems we go through in our life. 5 stars.

tomboy212003@yahoo.com
I recommend I Will Survive by Kristen Kemp. This book is about a girl who in her opinion seemed to have the perfect boyfriend. Although she hates her sister she finds consolation with her friend. She soon finds out that her too perfect boyfriend is not what he seems to be.

MoshChaos017@aol.com
I read The Dogs of Babel by Carolyn Parkhurst. It's a GREAT book - I STRONGLY recommend it to anyone who loves to read!!! It's about a man who, when his wife dies suddenly, decides to teach his dog to talk in order to find out what REALLY happened that day. It sounds kind of corny/odd, but it's really about the man realizing that his wife is dead and he needs to put her to rest. 100 out of 5 stars!!!!

pammywammy15@msn.com
I'm addicted to Gossip Girl! I usually don't read but this book has got me hooked! It makes me want to leave southern California and move to New York. There's going to be a movie coming out but I'll bet the book is better!

loopy44030@yahoo.com
A book that I highly recommend to teens is a biography called Mommie Dearest by Christina Crawford. This book showed me that my life is not always that bad. I also showed me not to judge by appearance alone. Some parts of this book I could connect with and that made it very interesting for me. I do not know who Christina Crawford or Joan Crawford are but it didn't really seem to matter. I give this book a rating of 4 stars.

shannonb@nyc.rr.com
Bras & Broomsticks by Sarah Mlynowski. Sooo funny and a great escape from school reading. I love anything about witchcraft, especially since Harry Potter.

pinkdolphin33@aol.com
Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen. 5 stars.
Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen. 3 stars.
That Summer by Sarah Dessen. 4 stars.
Dreamland by Sarah Dessen. 2 stars.

jennifer_ann@bellsouth.net
I am reading Tangled Threads: A Hmong Girl's Story by Pegi Deitz Shea. It's about an immigrant girl who moves to America and has to adjust to an entirely different culture and lifestyle. Even her cousins, who were her childhood friends, have become distant and tease her for being different. So far, I would give this book an A++!

chloe_87@hotmail.com
I just finished reading the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella. I absolutely loved Confessions of a Shopaholic. It is the funniest book I have ever read. I recommend it to any girl who likes a funny chick flick kind of read. Becky Bloomwood is the most down to earth, real young woman you'll find in books. I am now reading The Pact by Jodi Picoult, and it is so engrossing. Next, I hope to read Dreamland by Sarah Dessen because of all the great things I am hearing about it.

anonymous_7982@yahoo.com
A Time for Dancing by Davida Wills Hurwin. It's a really heart-rending book, but I love it!

Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. Also a kind of heart-rending book but I liked it.

Petey by Ben Mikaelsen. A pretty sad book, but it's ok.

Scorpia by Anthony Horowitz. The fifth book in the Alex Rider series. It's also the best, and the most heart-rending one. One of the must-read books!

biancawtn@hotmail.com
I recommend The Hollow Kingdom by Clare B. Dunkle. It's a fantasy book. It is about a goblin king who wants a beautiful girl to be his queen. Although the idea of a goblin may be disgusting, readers may be shocked to realize how good it really is. It's really sweet and romantic. The title may sounds boring, but I GUARANTEE this book gives readers an unexpected feeling. Want to find something new to read? Try this one!

zeepee1011@netscape.net
I would definitely recommend the book How My Private, Personal Journal Became a Bestseller by Julia Devillers. I would also recommend the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella. I have already read that series twice and I am waiting for her new book to come out. Thanks and enjoy the books!!!!!

monkey_belle99@shaw.ca
I suggest you read The Face on the Milk Carton series by Caroline B. Cooney!!!!!! I love them so much --- I couldn't put it down.

FBI Girl by Maura Conlon-McIvor. I am crying and laughing at the same time. What it means to find your voice while growing up in a secretive household!!!

imamonster23@yahoo.com
I've just finished reading Absolutely Normal Chaos by Sharon Creech. I borrowed it from my reading teacher and did not expect to be at all interested in it, but to my surprise it was wonderful! It is told as if you are reading Mary-Lou's (the main character's) journal. It is so interesting that I read it in 2 days straight! I couldn't put the book down! I recommend it to all of you out there who love to read an interesting book with a bit of humor.

aikensangel@bellsouth.net

nosilachica1590@hotmail.com
Sarah Dessen is a wonderful author and my favorite books of hers are This Lullaby, The Truth About Forever and Someone Like You. All very good books. I also recommend reading Fever, Speak and Catalyst by Laurie Halse Anderson. Born Confused by Tanuja Desai Hidier is also a very good book. I highly suggest reading all of these!!

super_dork_hotness07@hotmail.com
I love Lois Lowry. Her writing is exceptional. I love her thoughts that with the future life becomes more primitive! The Giver and Gathering Blue are my favorites. I hope to read Messenger soon.

lauren90@pbtcomm.net
I read four books off of my school's summer reading list last summer, and I have to say What Happened to Lani Garver by Plum-Ucci and The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold were the best ones on there. I recommend these books to anybody who just can't put down a book until they're running their eyes over the last page. These two books are a great and wonderful, life-experiencing read, and are truly powerful.

L4DY_4NN@hotmail.com
I'm currently reading Theories of Relativity by Barbara Haworth-Attard. After you read the book you'll think twice about walking by a homeless teen on the streets. I would definitely recommend this book to others!!!

nchodels@mindspring.com
I would like to recommend When the Wind Blows by James Patterson. This novel deals with the topic of genetic engineering. A veterinarian in Colorado sees a winged girl, and an undercover FBI agent finds out about what she has seen. A team of scientists have undertaken a mysterious project. Lives are in danger. What is going on here? Read When the Wind Blows to find out.

ctb1987@yahoo.com
I finished reading Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella and it was great. Hilarious. 5 stars.

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden is a very interesting book and shows a great deal of insight into a geisha's life. 5 stars.

East of Eden is one of my favorites. It is a great modern-day story of Cain and Abel and is the best of all of John Steinbeck's books. 5 stars.

An old favorite is A Gift of Magic by Lois Duncan. It is a great tale of the mystery and power of magic. 5 stars.

BlindlyBookish@aol.com
I'm reading Sorcery and Cecelia, and it is GREAT! Romance, intrigue, and the delicious subtlety of the 1800s makes this book such fun! I'd recommend it to anyone who likes these things!

thistimeimperfect89@hotmail.com

I just finished reading Thr3e by Ted Dekker. It's awesome. If you're into thrillers I really recommend it. Also his newest thriller, Obsessed, has been released. I'm reading it now, and I can't put it down.

Lady1Knight@msn.com
This afternoon I just finished reading The China Garden by Liz Berry. It was just a by-chance choice, and I absolutely loved this book. It's a romance wittled deep into a history of an English home over many centuries, along with a mystery that isn't all that simple to figure out.

Also finished reading the book Alice, I Think by Susan Juby, which is an extremely hippie-type book, but gives a lot of insight into the life of a homeschooled girl. I found myself laughing a lot.

Finally, if you like books that have been around for centuries, The Phantom of the Opera is a historic read. It's none like the movie, and not much like the Opera.

spikethebloodly@netscape.net
I just got done reading Gingerbread by Rachel Cohn. I know I am a little late on this book (seeing as it came out in 2002) but this book is really good. The main girl in the book named Cyd Charisse seems as if she is someone you could know. I loved this book. the style of writing is so easy to understand. You can feel the emotions of the characters in the book.

Also I am reading for a second time Luna by the best writer in the world, Julie Anne Peters. This story is lovely. There are no words to describe this book. I recommend this book to people with open minds and big hearts who can understand the subject of this book.

And I am also JUST now reading The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares, and from what I read so far I really like it. It is a real joy to read such a good book.

I also read Sweetblood by Pete Hautman. I had this book in school and a lot of people asked to look at it. The book is good, and I recommend it to everyone.

And last but not least, Dangerous Girls (book one) by R. L. Stine. I really liked this book. It did not end up as I thought it would, and I also recommend this book

As you can see I really love reading!

pinkprincess232001@yahoo.com
I am reading Cupidity by Caroline Goode and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to read a great book.

JoelnBridget12@aol.com
Right now I'm reading Guitar Girl by Sarra Manning. It's an awesome book about a girl and her band who instantly become famous. It talks about all the dirty things that go on when the cameras aren't rolling. It's definitely a book for music fans.

animika34@hotmail.com
Mister Monday by Garth Nix, in The Keys to the Kingdom series. 10/10 by me and will be reading Grim Tuesday, the second book in the series.

hrtermanini@hotmail.com
Georgia Nicolson's And That's When It Fell Off in My Hand (though in America you call it Away Laughing on a Fast Camel because some feel the title has a certain rudeness about it) is one of the funniest books I have ever read. It has its own individuality and isn't one of those "been there done that" kind of books. It shows a totally different look on life.

It's not a serious book; it's happy and perhaps a little silly. I think this is a good thing because it takes us away from the negative aspects of life and focuses on the way we can make the best of things, so it has a deeper meaning. It's a feel-good book and I enjoyed every second of it. I definitely give it 5 stars.

ana_lisa@comcast.net
Blue is for Nightmares by Laurie Faria Stolarz is one of those can't-put-it-down books. Full of suspense, mystery, romance and a little superstition, it is a wonderful beginning to the trilogy. Definitely 5 stars. Check out White is for Magic and Silver is for Secrets, also by Laurie Faria Stolarz.

Lopez3452@aol.com
Right now I'm reading Black Water by D.J. MacHale. If it was on a scale from 1-10 and 10 being the highest, I would give it a 10. This book is really good. There's a whole series on that book. I can't wait till the next one comes out (Waters of Zadaa).

nellnell930@yahoo.com
Split Image by Mel Glenn is the ultimate!!!! It's 10 stars!!!

higgins_rox@hotmail.com
My all-time favorite books are Sloppy Firsts and Second Helpings by Megan McCafferty. If you have not read these books I would strongly recommend that you read them. Also All-American Girl by Meg Cabot is excellent. The Year of Secret Assignments by Jaclyn Moriarty is also a great book that I would recommend you pick up. I have just finished reading The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, The Second Summer of the Sisterhood, and Girls in Pants by Ann Brashares and now I know what all the excitement was about. These books were excellent, I could not put them down. I would give all these books 5 stars.

infinity7230@aol.com

fried_phish@yahoo.com
Read How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff. It won the National Book Award for Young Adult Literature. It is about a 15-year-old girl who goes to stay with family in England to escape from her stepmom. A war breaks out and the children are left alone. It is a very good book that shows what it would be like to live with no adults and no supervision during the hardships of war.

rayzl210@comcast.net
Monsoon Summer by Mitali Perkins was excellent. I loved it because it described experiencing India and the poverty and beauty within it for the first time by somebody like me. This girl was part Indian, yet had grown up with all the modern conveniences that I have. My dream is to go to India someday, but it was pretty cool in the meantime to experience it through this girl's eyes!

shkruger@hotmail.com
Last Shot by John Feinstein is a good sports book. It is about the NCAA Final Four. You don't have to know a lot about basketball. You don't even have to like basketball to like the book. It is really a mystery about two contest winners who overhear someone telling a player he will have to lose the game for his team or else! The reader goes along on the adventure with the characters as they try to help the player and solve the mystery. There is information in the back of the book about a writing contest. The winners will receive tickets to the REAL Final Four games this April.

jczol@yahoo.com
I'm reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The book is amazing, no wonder it's an American classic. It's so good, I definitely recommend it to anybody looking for a good book to read.

nox_osu@hotmail.com
I read The Secret of Shabaz by Jennifer Macaire. I thought it had a good fantasy spirit in the book. I love unicorns too, and this book is all about a unicorn and a girl off to fight a war in disguise. I would definitely recommend this book.

midnightsun458@aol.com
Ah...let's see...I have ventured into the graphic novel world and been fortunate enough to stumble upon Bone by Jeff Smith. I finished reading The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen, a smart, funny and insightful read. I will have to pick up more of her books. Oh yes, and how could I forget?!?! Sloppy Firsts and Second Helpings by Megan McCafferty. Both had me and my friend talking about this book for weeks. Actually we still do talk about it. It's a very clever, honest book.

clumsy_3@hotmail.com
I am reading a lot of books right now. I'm practically a bookworm but not a geek! I really enjoy the Diary of a Teenage Girl series by Caitlin O'Connor! I'm so excited she's getting engaged.

thesunsetbeach@excite.com
A book I recommend that I just finished reading is 10 Things To Do Before I Die by Daniel Ehrenhaft. I think this is a great book and suspenseful. I already have friends asking to read it!

sillyme73@sc.rr.com
I really recommend Scribbler of Dreams by Mary E. Pearson if you enjoy romance kind of books. It is just like another Romeo and Juliet story, but way better and up-to-date.

Two families, the Crutchfields and the Malones, have hated each other for as long as Kaitlyn remembers. So when she fall in to a forbidden love, she's confused. In this book, she finds out the truth about her heritage and changes herself!

pigletgirl135@yahoo.com
I'm reading The Messenger by Lois Lowry. It's the sequel to The Giver and very hard to put down. I would definitely, definitely recommend these 2 books.

showtunegal521@comcast.net
I would definitely read Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz! It is an amazing book about a man who can see dead people. I know it sounds corny but it really isn't because he solves crimes and catches bad guys and stuff using his powers! A must read! I recommended it to my friend, and now it's her favorite book too!

m_luc88@hotmail.com
I'm reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. It's a really good book because you learn from the main character, Francie, as if you knew her personally. I'm enjoying the book. It is very hard to put down!

lawman@pa.net
I read Hooked by Wendelin Van Draanen. It is the greatest book to read if you're a teenage girl or even boy who likes to read about teen romance. It's about a girl, Julie and a boy, Bryce. Bryce moves in across the street from Julie and Julie automatically falls in love with him. She seems to pester Bryce and he doesn't really like her. Then, in 8th grade, they see the true side of each other and their feelings flip. Bryce sees how magnificent Julie has been all along, and Julie realizes that he is a liar and hasn't been a friend --- she just saw him as a cute boy. Will Bryce be able to win back what he could have had for the past six years? Each chapter is given in the perspective of both Bryce and Julie. No book could top this!

zeepee1011@netscape.net
I would definitely recommend Royally Jacked by Niki Burnham! It is one of the best books I have ever read. I just couldn't put it down!! I would also recommend the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella. I have read the whole series two times each and am planning to read them over and over again! I would give both of those books 5 stars!!!

jessicaeb_2007@yahoo.com
I just read Brooklyn Rose by Ann Rinaldi. It was really good. I could actually feel like I was there. She was 15 and was married! I can't imagine how that must have felt. Ann's book was just about a girl who was trying to find herself while at the same time trying to do what was best for her family and the man she was supposed to marry. She had many things ahead of her that she didn't think would ever happen. But she held strong and was able to live and be free. I recommend it to anyone.

PESKYTHECOW@aol.com
I really enjoyed the book All-American Girl by Meg Cabot. It was such a good book that when I was reading it, I would lose track of time and end up reading for an hour with all my homework left to do. This was one of the best books I have ever read.

I am currently reading The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Ever since the third book came out I had been hearing a lot about the series and decided that I should give the book a try. Well, I'm glad that I did because it is really a great book and I am looking forward to reading the second and third ones. Look out Ya-Ya Sisterhood. Here comes The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants!!!!!

WildRose682@yahoo.com
Right now I'm reading Be More Chill by Ned Vizzini. Jeremy Heere is one of the most geeky kids at his high school. All he wants is to fit in so he can get a girlfriend. Once he hears about this new mini-computer that can be put in your brain to make you cool, Jeremy knows he has to have one. With the help of his computer implant Jeremy works to take over his school until he's the coolest kid in his entire high school.

HHOCKEYGIRL24@aol.com
I'm in the middle of reading Candy by Kevin Brooks. It is one of the best books I have read in a long time. The book is so unbelievably true. I can really connect with the book. I think every teenager that is thinking about getting in a serious relationship should read this book.

dutchgrl1222@yahoo.com
I am crazy about The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. It is the best book I've ever read. This book is about three girls who find a magical pair of pants in one of their closets that fit all their different body shapes, and the adventures they have in them.

tinker_fairydust_900@hotmail.com
I am reading Trickster's Choice right now by Tamora Pierce and I am about halfway through. I discovered 1/5 of the way through that this is a wonderful book and worth reading to the end many times. It is about a spirited young girl who wants to be a spy, despite her parents' frequent disapproval. She goes off to cool down for a while and is captured and sold into slavery. She is soon thrust into a world of spying as she had dreamed so longingly for, but she had no idea it would be so hard! 5 stars!!

cool_girl_millie@yahoo.com
Summer of My German Soldier by Bette Greene. 5 stars.
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. 4 stars.

avalanchefan_001@yahoo.com

flight_of_a_phoenix@yahoo.com
I'm currently wading through Dune by Frank Herbert. It's a bit long, and quite complicated, but I found that once I got past the first few pages, the story is really fascinating. Stars are pending on the rest of the book, but I have the feeling it will be quite good.

mgrider@tcworks.net
I'm reading Enchantress From the Stars by Sylvia Engdahl. It's about a girl who is from a very well-developed plant that can travel through space and she becomes part of an organization who protects civilizations on underdeveloped plants. Her first mission is to a plant that is back in the medieval times and is being colonized by another well-developed civilization. So she and her fellow agents must help the underdeveloped civilization. This book is very science fiction. The rating would be two thumbs all the way to the moon.

Also the Pendragon series by D. J. MacHale is good but is also science fiction with a touch of fantasy.

vjmedina_butterly@comcast.net
I really recommend reading The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen. It shows you that no one can be perfect even if you try really hard. I give it 5 stars!

designrgurl@walla.com
My recommendations are:

Ties That Bind, Ties that Break by Lensey Namioka. I've read this 6 consecutive times!! It is about a Chinese girl who doesn't want her feet bound, creating lots of problems. It has a happy ending though so I like reading it.

Nicola and the Viscount by Meg Cabot. This is similar to The Princess Diaries and it is very cool!!

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. You might not read classics, but this is a good one!!

The Princess Diaries #6. This one has been read so many times it is getting torn.

Il Giornalino di Gian Burrasca. This is Italian, sure, but it is very funny.

The Secret Life of Sally Tomato by Jean Ure. A guy who wants a girlfriend...anything more interesting?

All-American Girl by Meg Cabot. I agree with wkoladzyn@nyc.rr.com that this is one of the best books EVA!!

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. This isn't very scary I promise. Actually Harry Potter scares me more. I like it but not enough as to read it again.

Heidi - BAD BOOK!

the_last_bassalope@yahoo.com
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, and the sequels. They are fantastic books, really the only books that make me crack up while reading them, causing strange looks from those around. They also create a strong desire to read the best parts out loud to whomever is nearby, be it your best friend, mother, or 3-month-old brother who obviously does not understand a word that was said.

lilitialianQt954@yahoo.com
Right now I am reading The A-List novels. I'm on Blonde Ambition! It's a great series and so is Gossip Girl. I can't wait for the movie!!

tparece@hotmail.com
I love Margaret Peterson Haddix's Running Out of Time. It had the right mix of historical fiction and contemporary mystery! Any of the books from her series of Among the Hidden stories is also a quick-fix for mystery lovers. Easy reading, lots of intrigue.

Princess Diaries. GREAT teen book!!
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE BOOK!
The Second Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Almost as good as the first one!
The Alice books by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. At first I thought they were kids books, but they are really teen books!
All-American Girl. One of Meg Cabot's best!

superskier567@aol.com
Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton. It's an extremely good book about South Africa in the 1940s and how it gets corrupted by new cities, and money-hungry people. The writing is so descriptive and it's almost poetic. 5 stars!!!

I'm also reading the series Spy High by AJ Butcher. These are about a secret High School where selected kids come for spy training. The books are so exciting I love them! 5 stars!

meagan_berry@hotmail.com
Becoming Ruby by Kathy Stinson was short but sweet. It included everything she thought about: guys, sex, her mother and her family. It was really honest and I read it in a few hours.

luv2read@zwallet.com

i would recommend Dreamland by Sarah Dessen. It is really good if you're into reading about teen relationships and feeling like an outsider. It really is a must-read. If you don't read it you will regret it...I promise you. Go ahead and get this book...you will love it.

I am reading The Shadow in the North by Philip Pullman. The book is very interesting, and it's also the second in the award-winning Sally Lockhart series.

I have recently read Swear to Howdy by Wendelin Van Draanen. It was an interesting book as well as funny. It's about a young boy who has recently moved and is seeking new friends. He meets his new neighbor and finds out about him, his family, and his special place. This is a great story for kids ages 10-14. I recommend this to anyone with a sense of humor and adventure.

I just finished Meg Rosoff's How I Live Now, about a girl who goes to England to visit her cousins and finds herself in a struggle for survival during a war. Sad but satisfying, with a unique style and voice. 4 stars.
