WORD OF MOUTH

June 2005

Tell Us What You Are Reading...Find Out What Other Teens Are Reading.

This contest period's winner was aliensrcoming@verizon.net, who received a copy of THE SLEDDING HILL by Chris Crutcher.

alexanderthegreat_rules@hotmail.com
The Trickster's Choice by Tamora Pierce is a really life-like fantasy novel. 4 stars.
The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman is definitely a 5-star sci-fi.
The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot. Being so interesting and gross is at least 4 stars.
How Do I Love Thee by Lurlene McDaniel. It is too sad, so it's 3 stars.

crykids@aol.com
I am going to recommend The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. It is an excellent book and I couldn't put it down!!! I would give it 5 stars!

hockygirlSarah@msn.com
The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen. It's now my all-time favorite book and I recommend it to anyone (especially teenage girls) trying to find themselves, or anyone who has lost someone. I couldn't put it down.

jessica-c@comcast.net
The Babysitter by R.L. Stine. It was a sure thriller.

rayzl210@comcast.net
My cousin is a friend of Aimee Friedman --- the debut author of the hot new book, South Beach --- and got me the book for free. I really loved it, and because of my connections, was able to talk to Aimee about how much I loved the book. I could go on for a while about how much I loved the book and why, but will stop now, so as not to bore the person who reads this.

damsel_of_darkness@myway.com
I read In the Forests of the Night by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. I recommend this book to anyone who believes in vampires. It is a great book that takes place in the present as well as the past. It focuses on the main character --- a female vampire --- and tells her story, what she went through in the past becoming a vampire, and what she's going through now as a vampire. It is one of the best books I have ever read and I would rate it 5 stars.

allnk110@aol.com
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. It's the best book I ever read. I can't wait until the next book in the series, Pretties, comes out in November!

linnymaefisha1793@yahoo.com
A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray is so great that I couldn't put it down and read it in two days. I'd recommend it if you like nail-biter fantasies.

jczol@yahoo.com
I just finished reading Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld, and it was amazing. A librarian recommended it to me, and I didn't think I would like it. But I'm very glad that I did read it, because otherwise I would be missing out. You should definitely read it if you like Meg Cabot's books and/or Gossip Girl books.

gab_glou@msn.com
I recommend Tamsin by Peter S. Beagle because it's a book that most teens would love to read, for it's scary, yet not too scary, and it's an adventure that you never want to end.

pltaylor@myrealbox.com
I am currently reading Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison, and I love it! 5 stars! Hilarious!!!

mrazchik14@yahoo.com
I LOVED The Year of Secret Assignments by Jaclyn Moriarty! It was super funny and had a great plot!!

megan19281@gmail.com
Girls In Pants by Ann Brashares. 5 stars.
The Third Summer of the Sisterhood is jam-packed with table-turning revelations in the girls' lives. A can't-put-down. Just like the first two books, it will keep you guessing…and wishing you had these kinds of friends.

What My Mother Doesn't Know by Sonya Sones. 5 stars.
A memoir written entirely in poetry form, this book is a wonderful read that can be done in one sitting. Breathtaking looks into the life of a girl whose boy troubles, friendly escapades, and downfalls with her soap-opera loving mother about prom dresses, keep you laughing and relating.

Stop Pretending by Sonya Sones. 4 1/2 stars.
Recommended for those who have friends or family dealing with mental illness. An amazing in-depth look at the toll mental illness takes on family and friends, and investigates the real issues behind the hurt.

Eragon by Christopher Paolini. 4 stars.
A tale of fantasy --- perfect for Harry Potter lovers --- that continues to keep readers on the edge of their seat as they follow a boy and a dragon through mythical worlds and never-ending surprises.

Aimee by Mary Beth Miller. 5 stars.
A tragic story of a girl who has to deal with her friend's suicide while being told she's being charged for helping her.

tennesseeterrapin@yahoo.com
When Jeff Comes Home by Catherine Atkins.
It was a great book, but readers under 14 should probably not read it. It's about a boy who is kidnapped, and it goes into a lot of detail.

gygymnast@suscom.net
The book I love is The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. It tells teens about the obstacles you face when you're away from friends. It could be anywhere from relationship problems to a little girl with cancer. But the best is knowing you'll be back with your best friends in the end.

bumblebeema@lycos.com
I adore the first and second Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books, the third just wasn't as awesome...so sad too, it had so much potential.

sooogrounded@yahoo.com
The Sledding Hill by Chris Crutcher.
Very preachy! Too many speeches! I did NOT love it like his other books.

The Boyfriend List by E. Lockhart.
Great book for girls, really fun to read.

The Garden by Elsie Aidinoff.
It took me three weeks to get through this book because it was so slow. But I finally did finish it. It was different.

meghan_sar@hotmail.com
I've recently begun reading a lot this year. I've read (and recommended all of the following): Gossip Girls series, A-list series, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, South Beach, Summer of the Boys (the 1st and 2nd). They are AMAZING! Also, Caribbean Cruising and Maine Squeeze. I've read many more, but those are the best that come to mind.

kolohegurl_1@yahoo.com
I am reading Patricia McCormick's Cut. What else is good?

MountainStream97@yahoo.com
I've been reading the Mediator series by Meg Cabot randomly, depending on the order in which order I can get my hands on them from my local library. As all of Meg Cabot's leading female protagonists, Suze is strong, strong-willed, open, blunt and to the point, funny, and endearingly naive as to how much her little blunders attract other people (and for some reason, always good-looking guys and fiercely loyal friends --- even if they too, have their own little quirks).

I would say that it's a good read --- good enough to continue, since Meg has established quite a steady flow (and good number) for readers to (what else) read. Err...on a scale of one to five stars, I would rate the first of the Mediator series, Shadowland, 3 1/2 stars.

liv2love15@gmail.com
The book I just finished from the library was Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen! She is a brilliant author! I highly recommend this book! It teaches you about self-confidence and it has a "romantic" thing in it! Read it!

scifi_angel8@hotmail.com
Stick Figure by Lori Gottlieb is my all-time favorite book. It gets a ten out of five stars. I've read it twelve times. Enough said.

ganghottie@yahoo.com
Prep by Jake Coburn is a great book that looks into being a child of upper society.

Hennajs92@hotmail.com
I have really enjoyed reading the Clique series novels. They are pretty much good for teens ages 12-15. Tell me a little bit of what you are reading.

whocares1988@hotmail.com
Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes. Superb!

em_mie88@hotmail.com
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.
This is an awesome book about Susie Salmon, a 14-year-old girl who is murdered. She tells the story of her family, friends and killer after her death, and how they get over their grief. I suggest you read this book as it is really good!!

bmulholland58@hotmail.com
Excellence: Sons of Xavier Forever by George Brennan, Jr. 5 stars.
This book is a quick humorous read about the author dealing with adolescence, while at the same time trying to survive the tough surroundings of an all-boys Catholic military school. I could totally relate to the author, and while learning I also laughed at his very colorful descriptions of friends and teachers. I finished the book in one afternoon, and it is the best book I ever read. I highly recommend it to everyone, especially teenagers. This book is built for teens.

bekkabrown@yahoo.com
I recently read The Supernaturalist by Eoin Colfer. I thought is was really really really good. This is the most awesome book that I've ever read. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes fantasy.

lil_jc_14@hotmail.com
The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen.
It's the first book of Sarah Dessen's that I really relate to, and it's among my favorites.

Keeping the Moon
by Sarah Dessen

Where the Heart Is
by Billie Letts.
Of course, this is also a movie and everyone has probably seen it, but honestly, the book is much better!

Kate_110489@hotmail.co.uk
Read Remember Me by Christopher Pike. It's great!

savoreverymomnt@hotmail.com
I just recently finished Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin. This book was amazing. It is about the life of African-Americans in the South way back when. It was great.

sandyshoe20022000@yahoo.com
I just finished reading The Clique, and I am going on to South Beach. The Clique was great, and everyone should read it.

xsnowwhit3x@yahoo.com
I recommend reading Angels & Demons by Dan Brown. Rated 10!! If you like it, then I suggest reading The Da Vinci Code, also by Dan Brown. They're great reads and I could not put them down! Also, you learn a lot of interesting facts.

trixiechick@comcast.net
I just read So Lyrical by Trish Cook and it was so awesome that I couldn't put it down!! 5 stars. If you liked Sloppy Firsts or The Traveling Pants series, you will love So Lyrical.

chilli252003@yahoo.com
How Not To Spend Your Senior Year by Cameron Dokey is a book that I think everybody would love. It has mystery, romance, humor, and much, much more. Don't miss out on a great book!!!!!!!!

Laughaholic7874@yahoo.com
I just finished ttyl by Lauren Myracle. It's such a good book!!! All of my friends recommended it to me, but I'd never read it before now. I really liked it!! 4 stars.

trueangelgirl234@hotmail.com
The best book of all-time that I think every teenager should read is Can't Get There From Here by Todd Strasser.

losangeles72@verizon.net
I recommend Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. It's about a girl named Tally, who turns sixteen. On her birthday she gets an operation that turns her from an ugly person to an attractive, pretty person. It's a very good book. I can't put it down. I give it 5 stars.

rainflower500@yahoo.com
The Pearl by John Steinbeck

vitaminssea@aol.com
I highly recommend The Giver by Lois Lowry.

ionescu233@yahoo.com
The Invisible Man by H.G Wells is amazing. At first, to be totally honest, I thought it was going to be stupid. But it wasn't. It is about a scientist who turns himself invisible. I know that sounds way lame, but if you need a book, try this one. You might like it...

kimb0816@comcast.net
I just read the The Insiders two days ago. I read Pass It On: An Insiders Novel a day ago, and I just finished reading Take It Off: An Insiders Novel, by J. Minter.

peachtea@ptd.net
I recently took up on reading:
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares

surfpup101@yahoo.com
I am reading Crooked by Laura and Tom McNeal. I really recommend this book for anyone who has been having a hard time finding a good book to read. The narrator switches from Clara Wilson to Amos MacKenzie. This book discusses the issues of death, divorce, juvenile delinquency, a growing friendship that turns into something else, and most of all, how to cope with things.

ablankline@aol.com
Stormbound by Paul Peters. 5 stars.
I loved this book! What a great time travel tale! It is written by my former 8th grade teacher. The story is a complete surprise and not once did I know where it was going. I couldn't wait for the next chapter. The historical people, places, and events that were visited made it a wonderful story. The alternate ending of several tragedies made this a very special book to me. The last two chapters were both unexpected and great!

The story begins with a bang. After an unexplained glimpse into the future by Section 9, Gordon Greer is brought out of forced retirement and recruited for a desperate mission to save the Earth from an unexplained destruction. Complicating matters further are the closely hidden secret of time travel and the ultimate motives of Section 9. With only two weeks left before the end of the world, Greer and a young operative are sent into the past by Section 9 to find the one person who can help unravel the mystery and escape disaster.

Robert Maryk, a 20th Century man living in 1881, is their last link to a secret Project named Timepiece. From prior experiences, he held no love for Section 9. In his possession is an advanced temporal vessel known as a S.T.O.R.M.: the only vessel that would allow them to get close enough to the moment of Earth's destruction to investigate and prevent the planet's extinction. After Maryk's help is enlisted, they return to the future and formulate a plan. Maryk and Section 9 enter into a fragile truce as others with their own agendas are recruited for the mission.

Journeying into the immediate future, Greer and his team are handed numerous reverses as their enemies appear, some hidden and some not. Unsuccessful at stopping the Earth's destruction on their first attempt, they make matters worse and put all of human history in jeopardy. Traveling extensively through time and to a parallel universe, they endeavor to save the planet and all of humanity.

The best books in the world are:
Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld
Sloppy Firsts and Second Helpings by Megan McCafferty
Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

These will get you through the summer being very entertained! They are all edgy, intelligent and easy to read. Have your friends read them, too...because you will definitely be dying to talk to someone about the great characters in these books.

libragirl104@hotmail.com
I absolutely fell in love with American Gods. It is a very well thought-through book by Neil Gaiman, and is different from most books I've read. It is a fantasy/fiction book about an ex-con working for a mysterious man in a world in which many people aren't who they seem to be.

eac12890@yahoo.com
The Slightly True Story of Cedar B. Hartley by Martine Murray, a fun, easy book to read about a girl who lives in Australia...and how she finds out a little about herself.

anniemo_90@networld.com
The Summer of Riley by Eve Bunting.
This is a great book about a boy named William, his dog, Riley, and Will's fight to save Riley's life. This is a great book for animal lovers.

jollymoonbeam@yahoo.co.uk
Got to be The Key to Chintak by John Howard. Without doubt the best book I have ever read!!!!! I am not going to tell you the plot but I will say it is an excellent mix of fact and fiction.

kat_1809@hotmail.com
I read To Kill a Mockingbird when I was 13 and I would strongly recommend it to everyone, especially those looking for a novel including racism. It is a strong, powerful adult novel, and a world reknown bestseller. Honestly 10 stars out 10.

yankeedancer2211@yahoo.com
Girls Dinner Club by Jessie Elliot.
This book is about three girls who start cooking together and become very close. Each girl has her own problem, but the other girls help them get through it. I would definitely recommend it to anybody!

yankeedancer2211@yahoo.com
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series by Ann Brashares.
Those are quite possibly the three best books I have ever read in my life. The title makes them sound like they are for young girls, but the pants aren't the important part of the books. The books are about friendship and love, not about pants. The pants were more a symbol than anything else.

jncluv2shop@yahoo.com
Pulling Princes by Tyne O'Connell.
It's a really great book!!! It's one of the British novels I'm into right now. It's hilarious but, at the same time, very realistic. I love it!!!

Sgooch@canada.com
Right now, I'm reading a book called Dog Handling by Clare Naylor. It is about a woman who gets dumped right before her wedding, so she runs off to Australia with her best friend. She tries to land an old flame using her friends' tips to treat a man like a dog, which will have him eating out of her hand. This book is very well written and has many twists and turns. I give it 10 stars.

Leahofthecoconut@yahoo.com
The Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien. 5 stars.
The Two Towers by J. R. R. Tolkien. 5 stars.
The Return of the King by J. R. R. Tolkien. 5 stars.

elfsingr_12491@yahoo.com
One of the best books I've ever read is Chris Crutcher's Whale Talk. It talked about important issues such as racism, child abuse, outcasts, and the pros and cons of organized sports. It had a great ending, sad but happy at the same time. I can't wait to read more of Chris Crutcher's books.

The other great book I just read was, incidentally, Ironman by Chris Crutcher. An awesome read about a guy who is battling anger issues and a father who just doesn't understand him, and doesn't even try. A GREAT read if you like books about real-life teenage problems.

cobi_gurlz55@yahoo.com
The Boy Next Door by Meg Cabot
Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging: Confessions of Georiga Nicolson by Louise Rennison
The Earth, My Butt and Other Round Things by Carolyn Mackler

RoseGirl85@gmail.com
Protector of the Small quartet by Tamora Pierce. I give this quartet 5 stars.

aliensrcoming@verizon.net
Eragon by Christopher Paolini is one my most favorite books. It rivals Harry Potter. Paolini created a wonderfully detailed and well-crafted magical world with unforgettable characters. Not to mention the magic, sword fighting, dragons and mystery that make this book impossible to put down. It may look big, but don't be intimidated; you will breeze right through this book. 5 out of 5 stars.

dn_kyl@yahoo.com
I am reading Prom by Laurie Halse Anderson. It is kind of slow at the beginning, but is getting really good. It makes you think of things you wouldn't even think about otherwise.

britty12377@hotmail.com
Love and Other Four Letter Words. It's a funny and cool book about learning to cope.

Gossip Girl #7
. I cannot put these down once i get started on them.

The A-List: Blonde Ambition
. Again, another of those intoxicating series that cannot be put down until you are done!

Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor by Stephanie Barron. 5 stars.
Jane and the Man of the Cloth by Stephanie Barron. 5 stars.

imj16@sbcglobal.net
Ender's Game series by Orson Scott Card. They are all very good science fiction books.

drama_chef@hotmail.com
Right now, I'm reading the 6th Princess Diaries book. It's great! I just checked out You Know You Love Me. It's the second Gossip Girl Book.

cathyoloffson@hotmail.com
Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. 5 stars!
Very interesting to think about how our unconscious impacts our conscious thoughts and the decisions we make in the blink of an eye.

cocomarieaz@yaho.com
I have read a lot of books recently:

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
was so great, and I really related to Tibby, because all of her friends go on outside adventures, leaving her all alone, just like me :( But it definitely deserves 4 stars.

Nicola and the Viscount
was excellent, even though it was a little boring at first. It's a great romantic adventure kind of book, but not too suspenseful. 4 stars.

Boy Proof
. Great on so many levels. It was sad, about boys and fame and so many great subjects (My Faves!!!) 5 stars.

Victoria and the Rogue,
which was pretty much in the same time period as Nicola and the Viscount, but I found this book way better overall. It's pretty cool because Victoria is very headstrong and confident, but maybe too confident? I definitely recommend this book. 5 stars.

Gingerbread. So many people have read it already, so you probably know what it's already about, huh? (If you haven't already!) Well I definitely recommend it and I can't wait until I read the sequel, Shrimp. 4 stars.

And now I'm on Born Confused, which is great. 4 stars.

lizard23@mchsi.com
The Clique by Lisi Harrison.
It's really good --- I am addicted to it!!! I am looking for the other two in the series and looking forward to the 4th one that's coming out soon. Really good books!!!!

janel_alters@yahoo.com
The Last Domino by Adam Meyer is a great book. This is another dark book yet it is almost a bit like nonfiction. Mr. Meyer sums it up as: A troubled teenager. A vicious bully. A loaded gun. WELCOME TO HIGH SCHOOL. This is a fabulous book that gets into the mind of the soon-to-be killer and the DOMINO EFFECT of what will lead him to bringing a loaded gun to school. When will the last domino fall and what will be its outcome? Read this book to find out!

stephanie186@hotmail.com
I strongly recommend The Da Vinci Code. This book was incredible if you love a good suspense novel. You also learn about the arts and it's an easy read. I give it a 5 stars.

juggalette4life01@hotmail.com
I recomend that you all read The Old Man and the Sea. It is a really great book. It makes you think and it is soooo interesting!

meagan_berry@hotmail.com
I just finished Confessions of a Shopaholic and Shopaholic Takes Manhattan. Right now I'm reading the third one, Shopaholic Ties the Knot. They are hilarious!! A light read, not a lot of thinking involved. A good summer read.

kittykatgirl778@yahoo.com

karleycb@hotmail.com
I am reading the Daughters of the Moon series, currently on number 8. They are really good. They are about four friends who find out they are goddesses. I suggest that any teen girl who doesn't know what to read pick one up.

aliensrcoming@verizon.net

Fearless FBI. It is an amazing book following the series, Fearless. It's a real page turner.

nabecca90@verizon.net
Summer Boys and Next Summer by Hailey Abbott.
3 hot summer romance stories in each...you are guaranteed to be stuck to these books.

MadameCouture@comcast.net
I am reading Tangerine by Edward Bloor. I absolutely LOVE the book! It is a great --- but weird --- mystery about a boy named Paul living in the town of Tangerine, Florida, where the weather has a mind of its own. Paul also begins to find out that his brother Erik has amazing secrets in his past, and how they changed Paul's life forever.

missplobby@yahoo.co.uk
I love Pirates by Celia Rees. It is an amazing tale of two girls who turn to the life of piracy for very different reasons. Also, Celia Rees's other books Witch Child and Sorceress are really interesting, and her stories seem real. Though her new book The Wish House is good, it is not as good as the other books! She is an amazing writer!!!

aliensrcoming@verizon.net
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is one of my favorite books. It is an absolutely hysterical story about Arthur Dent --- an Earthman --- the last of the human race saved by his alien friend, Ford Prefect when the Earth is demolished to make way for an intergalactic highway. Absolutely wonderful!

lilessie53@yahoo.com
Where I Want To Be by Adele Griffin is a book that holds your attention from the second you pick it up (you'll pick up and read in one day).

I suggest The Year of Secret Assignments by Jaclyn Moriarty. It is a book set up in letters and emails and is definitely a must-read for girls.

standardbred_91@hotmail.com
I am reading a fantastic book called Drowning Anna. It is an emotional book that leads you into the life of a teenage girl who has to face a bully each day. It may seem like a cheap book, but it shows you what people face everyday and how hard it is to cope with it.

msbandgeek91@aol.com
Fearless FBI: Kill Game by Francine Pascal. I gave it a 5, being the coolest and most thrilling.

emo182@lightbound.com
A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray.
One of the greatest books I could name.

imaloser4evr@hotmail.com
Izzy, Willy-Nilly by Cynthia Voigt.
This book is a must-read, page-turner. It is just awesome. I think everyone should read it! Love it!!!

Lil_Brat_245@hotmail.com
I just finished reading Love & Sk8 by Nancy Krulik. It's about this girl named Angie who wants to get out of this little town to pursue her dreams as an artist. She paints custom boards at a skate shop and if she not working, she is with her friends skating. Love sparks when Carter walks in to the shop, but the problem is that he is all prep and she's not. There are alot of twist and turns throughout the book.

I also recommend A Rip in Heaven: A Memoir of Murder and its Aftermath by Jeanine Cummins. Sisters Julie and Robin Kerry and their cousin Tom Cummins were on the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, when Robin and Julie were raped and the three of them were pushed off the bridge. This book reflects the family's emotions after they found out, and all the things they had to deal with, like the police and court. It was good! Trust me!!!

I checked out Melissa de la Cruz's book called The Au Pairs. It was really good and had a great plot line! If you liked the Gossip Girls series by Cecily von Ziegesar, then you will love this book. It is all about the rich people living in New York and everything they face.

Vote for Larry. This book is so good, it is my favorite. Everyone needs to read this book, especially teens who want to change the world for the good, but don't know how. Please read, you won't regret it.

ttyl by Lauren Myracle. This book is told entirely in instant messages, I loved it. I think that anyone who likes to instant message with their friends would love this book like I do!! The instant messages are between 3 best friends starting high school and vowing to be best friends and not let school stuff get in the way. But then things start to change!!!! This is a must- read!!

I am currently reading (and greatly enjoying) the Cirque Du Freak series by Darren Shan. Right after I finished the first book I bought the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th books in this series. They are very good books and you cannot stop reading until you finish the very last book in the series.

I recently checked out Pulling Princes by Tyne O'Connell and I loved it. The ending was a little bit of a letdown, but the book was great. I can't wait to see if she will write any other young adult books.

I read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. It is a wonderful book. I thought that it would be one of those boring, hard-to-read books, but I was really surprised. This book is a great summer-read. I give it 5 stars.

Ella Enchanted is a wonderful book. I thought that the book was a million times better than the movie, which really disappointed me. Ella Enchanted is an awesome book.

Well right now, A Corner of the Universe by Ann M. Martin, Valient by Holly Black, and There's a Girl in My Hammerlock by Jerry Spinelli.

The book is called A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer. It's so touching, and shows me what some teens/children really go through. It makes me appreciate the life that I live, and I'm soooo grateful that I have the BEST parents in the world.

My fav books: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. All of those are by J. R. R. Tolkien. If you haven't read them, read them! (if you think you know the whole story because you've seen the movies, you have never been more wrong in your life!)
