This book was so great. It had me hooked from page one. With non-stop thrills, fights, and flights (literally!), this book never bored me. | Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson |
Rating: 4 Stars
SPEAK by Laurie Halse Anderson is a realistic fiction novel about a teenage girl named Melinda whose life takes an unexpected turn after a tragic event in the summer. After calling the cops on a party, Melinda’s friends ignore her completely and won’t even look at her. She is shy and never speaks. She keeps her emotions bottled up inside and is perfect at putting on a mask so no one will know what really happened at the end-of-summer party.
Melinda finally meets a girl named Heather, who has just moved into the town from Ohio. Melinda isn’t exactly a good friend to Heather and Heather isn’t a good friend to her. They are so different and want different things in life you could hardly see why they like each other. Melinda failing in all her classes? That’s unexpected. She used to be a great student until the summer. Now the only class she likes is Art. She is a great artist and her emotion in her art grows with each marking period. My opinion of SPEAK is that it is an emotional and suspenseful novel that will have your attention for hours. You will never want to put this book down once you start reading it. I think this book does an excellent job of dealing with teenage issues and is very realistic. Many of the things that happen in the novel happen to hundreds of people every day. I recommend this book to anyone that likes Art or crafts or even just drawing. It shows how much emotion an artist puts into his or her painting and the hard work to come up with ideas for your painting, sculpture, or drawing. I also recommend this book to teenage girls who like reading about the common problem the teenagers go throw at home, school, and with their friends.

I think this book was amazing. Deenie is a 13 year old with scoliosis. The book shows what a teenage girl's life is like with scoliosis. It it was very touching and made me think that this could happen to anyone in real life. It shows a lot about inner and outer appearance. Judy Blume is a fantastic author and her other books are great. This happens to be one of my favorites that I read more than once. I couldn't put it down so all of you teenage girls should definately give this book a try (=

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
Rating: 5 Stars
The novel, MY SISTER'S KEEPER, is about a thirteen-year- old girl named Anna Fitzgerald who has a sister named Kate. Kate has a rare form of leukemia. The only way Kate’s parents can save her is through Anna, who is artificially conceived by her parents so that she would genetically match Kate’s traits. This way, Anna can be a donor for her sister.
However, Anna does not like the situation. She feels as if she was only born to save her sister and that if Kate was not diagnosed with cancer, Anna would not have been born. Also, the people who make the decisions about what Anna donates to her sister are Anna’s parents. Anna’s mother, Sara, will do anything to save Kate, and this makes Anna feel as if she has no say in what she feels is best. Kate takes a turn for the worse. Her kidneys are failing and she needs a transplant or she will die. Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald are planning on Anna to donate her kidney, but Anna has does not want to go through with the procedure. She feels that as long as she keeps helping Kate, she will never be an individual. In order to gain the right to control what happens to her own body, Anna hires lawyer Campbell Alexander. Campbell agrees to help Anna petition the courts to allow her to gain medical emancipation from her parents. By doing so, Anna will be able to make medical decisions on her own, and she will not be forced to donate a kidney. Anna’s family is shocked by Anna’s decision. They cannot believe refusal to be a donor for Kate any longer. Anna’s mother is the one who gets hit the hardest by the news. Mrs. Fitzgerald loves both her daughters, but has always counted on Anna to be the one there to save Kate.
Throughout the novel, Anna is faced with many difficult situations. She is confused about what is the right thing do. Should she continue with the transplant and never really be an individual person, or should she follow her heart and let her only sister die? In my opinion, the novel was wonderful and engaging. The plot was full of twists and turns and I couldn’t put the book down. The ending to this book was so unexpected. I didn't even see it coming! It made me cry. You grow so attached to the characters that you feel like you really know them. This book made the experience of reading all that more enjoyable.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about families facing tough decisions. I also recommend this to anyone who loves to read books that cause you to become so attached to the characters, they make you cry.

Wolf Rider by Avi
Rating: 4 Stars
In my opinion, this book is far from a horror novel. I found it more suspenseful than scary at all. It also had a hint of mystery in it. I also liked it because the print is big, the book is not heavy, and it did not take me long to read.
I recommend this book to someone who has time to read. I had time to read, so I could follow along, and it was good. I also would recommend this to an extremely good reader, who just needs to read a quick and good book.

Animal Farm by George Orwell
Rating: 4 Stars
George Orwell’s ANIMAL FARM details the lives of a group of farm animals living on Manor Farm in the English countryside. The animals become fed up with their oppressive human owner and one day rebel, declaring war on the human race and establishing a taboo towards any animal that stands on two legs.
ANIMAL FARM, together with Orwell’s more widely known 1984, are two of the most shockingly realistic books that I have ever read. Although ANIMAL FARM is part of the 10th grade curriculum in some high schools; it is definitely readable by any teen. Every character in the book has a real life counterpart; with impressive connections to real world entities such as Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. This book gives the reader an easy-to-comprehend insight as to how the mind of a society functions and how greedy and cruel leaders can rip it apart at the seams.
This book is a must read for every teen and adult growing up in the modern world. No matter what you think about life today, you will be shocked by how similar the theories and governing structure that Orwell describes is to real life society. If you read this book, then I definitely suggest that you also read 1984, detailing the depressing life of a man living in an alternate future ruled by a brutal totalitarian regime.

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Rating: 5 Stars
UGLIES was an absolutely amazing book. Every single part of it was always exciting because you would never know what will happen next. It also was hard to put down once I began reading it. I just loved how no matter what part of the book I was at, there would always be another part to be curious about. What made the book also extremely interesting was how life was so much different then the way it is now. In UGLIES, there are such things as hover boards, bungee jackets, and whatever someone wanted would simply come out of the wall. It's almost like this story is like what the world would be like in the future. Overall, this book is my absolute favorite and I definitely recommend someone who is looking for a great book to choose UGLIES.

Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin
Rating: 5 Stars
Summary: In ELSEWHERE, the main character, Elizabeth “Liz” Marie Hall gets hit by a cab while riding a bike and dies. She wakes up in a huge ship that takes her to a place called Elsewhere, which is where the dead go. It looks much like Earth, but no one dies and no one is born. Also, you age backward from when you died until you are a baby. When you become a baby, you get sent back to Earth and are born as another person. In this novel, you learn about how “Liz” adjusts to life/death in Elsewhere.
Opinion: In my opinion, ELSEWHERE is one of the best books I have ever read. I liked it a lot. It seemed very believable to me. In this book, you always want something good to happen to “Liz”.
Recommendations: I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading an enjoyable novel. I could not put this book down until I finished reading it. This will really make you feel as if you are in Elsewhere.

I have a copy of this book, and let me tell you, it is so beat up: the cover is torn (I had to tape it up) and the pages are worn. It just goes to show you how I can't put this book down. I bought it when I was in fourth grade and I loved it. Now, years later, it is still my favorite book and I've pretty much memorized the whole book. ELLA ENCHANTED is a retelling of the classic Disney fave, Cinderella. And if you haven't read it, get it, buy it, borrow it, steal it --- whatever you have to do to read it because it really is an awesome book. (p.s. I didn't really mean steal it. I'm not saying stealing is good either, but I am saying that this book is worth the time to read.)

However, they come from two clashing societies and beliefs, which ultimately becomes a test for their relationship. Being a fan of historical fiction, I am in love with this book. The characters are so multi-layered and interesting, even the villains. Just one thing: there are some "adult" situations, so to speak, so it's not for younger teens. It's technically an Adult book, but it's so amazing I just had to read it.

THE SOUND AND THE FURY is a complicating book to understand at first, but reading deeper into it, it gets better and is a very good story!

Paris 1919 by Margaret Macmillan
Rating: 4 Stars
A very engrossing analysis of the Paris peace talks following the first World War. Although the material is very heavy and most times intensely thought provoking, the narrative is engaging and skillful. The content, of course, is extremely interesting for those history nerds out there (like me). I highly recommend this to anyone who likes the social sciences.

The cover, title, and summary may look totally lame, but the story is not. When you finally get past the beginning, it starts to get good.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
Rating: 5 Stars
This is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. If you love reading about hidden worlds with magic, demons, vampires, angels, werewolves, romance, adventure, and the supernatural, then this is the book for you. Trust me, you won't want to put it down!

Girls in Pants by Ann Brashares
Rating: 5 Stars
This 3rd book in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series has lots of different things happening to each of the 4 friends at each time, but they are all involved with each other somehow. It is the best book I have read in a long time and I read quite a lot of books! It is more of a book for girls than boys, and it keeps you thinking because anything could happen next.
I would definitely recommend it.

I had to read this one for AP English. When I started it, I didn't have much interest, but then more I read, the more I wanted to see how it ended. In a way, I view this book as a journey of finding oneself.

Schooled by Gordan Korman
Rating: 5 Stars
This had to be the funniest book I have read in a long time! I cried, I was laughing so hard. The story is almost like a reverse of STARGIRL, with a boy who is the odd one out. It is told from the perspective of several different narrators, which adds to the laughs. It also warns against the dangers of living on a farm commune with no one but your hippie grandmother, and suddenly having to survive in a middle school with 1100 "normal" students who decide to elect you as class president your first week of entering civilization! What a hoot!

Ready or Not by Meg Cabot
Rating: 2 Stars
I usually love everything that Meg Cabot writes, but this time, I was really disappointed. Maybe it was just because the first book was so good or maybe not. I found that this book didn't have any action and was sex obsessed. All the main characters could think about was sex.

Snakehead by Anthony Horowitz
Rating: 4 Stars
Another awesome Alex Rider adventure by Anthony Horowitz! I'm so glad he decided to write another installment (I was worried it would end with ARK ANGEL) and I hope he continues on with the series. I would recommend this book to anyone who has read other books in the series (if you've never read the series before, you'd still get the gist of this book, but it would lack the depth and prior background knowledge that makes for the best reading experience possible).

I thought I wouldn't enjoy his book when I got it and its two sequels, and I figured it would take me a week or so to read all of them. Wrong! I read the first one in 2-and-a- half hours and immediately started the second one. I love Max and Fang, Iggy Gasman, Nudge and Angel. It took me two days to read all three of them and I recommend it to anyone. Read It!

PEEPS is about a disease that makes people into vampires. Cal Thompson has to track down peeps to keep people safe. Then, strange things start happening that make him question the real purpose of what he is doing. There is a lot of information about real parasites in this book, and how they keep the world in balance. It's fascinating and edge-of-your-seat thrilling.

Go Ask Alice by Anonymous
Rating: 5 Stars
This book was one of the best I have read so far! It is very said scary and funny. It is a true story that shows what drugs can do to you, even if you have only had it once. I recommend this to readers 12 and up. I will never forget this book, or its main character!! I still can't believe it was a true story because it seemed fake --- like "that can't happen to me." But it can, and that's the scary part about this book.
This book is the best book I have read and i will not forget it! I really recommend it to readers 12 and up. Read it!

The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
Rating: 5 Stars
I really did enjoy THE OTHERY BOLEYN GIRL, regardless of the constant references to 'adult' matters (though that was what the whole book was about, being the king's mistress and all). I was able to sympathize with Mary and her goals and root for her; I was also able to despise Anne at times, and --- at other times --- want to give her a hug.
The ending kind of disappointed me. I was looking forward to Mary rushing off to save her sister, but something else entirely happened that I didn't quite like.

Extras by Scott Westerfeld
Rating: 5 Stars
I enjoyed EXTRAS immensely --- I think Scott Westerfeld is incapable of writing a book that doesn't capture your attention within the first few sentences. He had me hooked to read the rest of the story and I wasn't able to put it down. However, EXTRAS doesn't live up to its prequels, and it isn't so much as a continuation of the series as the beginning of another that takes place in the same world.
