The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson
Rating: 4 Stars
A very captivating read. It was very well written and I found all of the characters to be very interesting. I give it four stars, even though I didn't get that 'wow, let me sit and let the amazingness soak in' feeling after reading it, but I think that has something to do with the ending. I believe the story would have been more effective if it ended at a different part. However, that is just my opinion. I still recommend this book. :)

The Dead and the Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer
Rating: 4 Stars
This book is a companion to LIFE AS WE KNEW IT, but is set in New York City. If you read the first book, you would remember that the story begins when an asteroid hits the moon and moves it closer to the earth with disasterous effects. Flooding of coastal cities, disappearance of entire countries under water, volcanic eruptions, climate change, crops dead, communications satellites no longer operational. Millions die, and those who are left begin to go hungry.
It's not a eek-scary story, but somehow scares you more deeply than any monster, because we have something similar to worry about now... global warming.
The main character's parents disappear on the day the moon is hit and he is left to take care of his younger sisters in increasingly bleak surroundings. Time begins to run out...
I probably won't read this book again, because it can be a bit morbid and sad, but I'm glad I read it. It also goes into some concepts that make me worry about people, like whether we really do care about other people and what would cause us to sink to levels we never would have gone before.

Simon Bloom, The Gravity Keeper by Michael Reisman
Rating: 4 Stars
Before I read this book, I thought I'd pretty much seen it all when it came to characters with powers. There's magic, ESP, mutant abilities, psionic powers, or even "the manipulation of the world's energy" in books, but this book did something different.
The main character, Simon Bloom, becomes the keeper of a Book that contains the laws of physics themselves, and tells him how to change them. It surprised me how much the alteration of the laws of physics could work out as a "superpower".
One thing that takes away from the book is that some of the dialogue, especially from the villians, doesn't seem quite natural or believable.
This is more a middle-grade novel than a teen novel, but I loved it anyway.

The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson
Rating: 5 Stars
I really loved this book! It wasn't an epic or action-filled story, but it really made me think. And the plot was very well planned out, and some of the revelations shocked me. It was very suspenseful, and the main character was very believable.
It began when Jenna Fox wakes up from a coma she's been in for a year after a horrible accident, but some things seem very wrong. Her parents aren't telling her something...

Gone by Michael Grant
Rating: 5 Stars
I loved this book so much! It's one of the best I've read the entire year! It's a bit like THE GIRL WHO OWNED A CITY crossed with X-Men. First, everyone 15 and over disappears. This may sound corny, but the story gets more complex and intriguing as it continues. The good news is, it's the first in a six book series. Bad news, the next book won't be published for months.

Crime and Punishment by Feodor Dostoevsky
Rating: 4 Stars
As far as books for school go, this one is really good. I'm about a third of the way through it and I can barely put it down. The only thing that I don't like about it is that the characters names are all in Russian and therefore a little bit of a pain to pronounce and read.

Paradox
The Declaration by Gemma Malley
Rating: 3 Stars
To tell the truth, I was a little disappointed in this book because it wasn't what I expected it to be. I thought it would be more of a fast-paced futuristic thriller with a wide range of locations and characters fighting against the corrupt government. But most of the story took place in one building, and not much is really explained. Also, the main character is brainwashed for most of the story.
The story takes place over 100 years in the future, when people have come up with a drug to make them immortal, and having children is illegal. The children that are born are called Surpluses, and are taught that they shouldn't exist and are made into servants. The only legal children are those with parents who opt out of the Declaration, which they must sign to get longevity drugs. The main character, Anna, lives in a home for surpluses and is taught to hate her parents for letting her be born. She believes everything she is told, until a boy is brought to the home who says he knew her parents and they want her back.
I'm hoping that the story will show more about this future world in the sequal, THE RESISTANCE.

Princess Ben by Catherine Murdock
Rating: 4 Stars
I enjoyed this book a lot, despite its similarities to the other "rebellious princess" stories.
The story is good, and I love how Ben discovers magic, but I'm disappointed that the book never explained much about the magic in her family.
The book is written as if by Ben when she is much older, so some of the wording seems a bit off for a 15-year-old girl.
I also thought the ending didn't come out quite right, but the parts about Ben practicing magic in the tower room made up for a lot of what was wrong.

Faerie tales have always been a favorite of mine. When I first got this book from the library, it completely revamped the type of faerie tales I preferred. Its a creepy and horrifying story that kept my attention until the very last page.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
Rating: 5 Stars
With this fourth and final installment of the Twilight series I found myself hopelessly caught up in the suspenseful storytelling and wasn’t able to put the book down. Ms. Meyer created characters that seemed like real people whom I cared about deeply and was rooting for throughout the whole series. This was a wonderful fairy tale/fantasy read, and I could have easily read another 700 pages. I highly recommend this fun, creative and thought-provoking saga. Vampires, werewolves (shape-shifters) and a satisfying happily-ever-after --- doesn’t get any better!

The book was a good one. It is amazing to see what girls (and women) had to put up with in 19th-century Chinia; from getting their feet bound, assigned marriages, and not even guaranteed a place in your husband's home if you do not have a son. Our world has changed a lot since then.

Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy
Rating: 3 Stars
Having an older man as a friend isn't easy... especially if he's a skeleton. Why did Derek Landy make Stephanie only 12? Too young, I believe, for the mature things that come from her. This five-star-worthy book would have gotten it if Landy had made her more plausable.
Landy winds this tale tightly, but lets it spin too fast and let-me-guess towards the end. A good read, but it doesn't exactly leave you begging for more.

What my Mother Doesn't Know by Sonya Sones
Rating: 5 Stars
Girls, has a guy ever left a note in your locker mysteriously, driving you to hunt to find the "masked man"? This is what happens to Sophie in WHAT MY MOTHER DOESN'T KNOW. At a Halloween dance, her "masked man" asks her to dance. After she falls in love with his forearms and gets close to kissing him, she knows she's in love and must find out who he is.
When Sophie finds her supposed love, will she be shocked or totally in love? She may be a quiet, soft-spoken, boy crazed, and static character until this point, but will she out grow these characteristics when she finds her “masked man”?
To me, Sonya Sones put this book together in a way that doesn’t leave you confused but wandering and wanting to read more. From the minute I started to read it, I knew I would love it, and it stayed the same through the whole book. I will recommend this book to anyone who I know is in the same situation or not in this situation.

The Things They Carried by Tim O' Brien
Rating: 5 Stars
I liked this book because it held true to the harsh realities of war and didn't try to romanticize everything. The individual short stories ranged from humorous to tear jerking and even to the somewhat grotesque, making an interesting mix that made me want to keep reading. I can honestly say that some of these stories are definitely not suited for those who are weak of stomach when it comes to reading gross details. It is, after all, about the Vietnam War. I, however, personally enjoyed it and think it would be a great read for teens who like reading on a more mature age level. Also, it would be a great book for anyone who is interested in the Vietnam War or war books in general.
